UPS acts as a barricade to protect from all the power impurities to your important IT equipment installed in the server room. Uptime and utter dependability are the most important criteria when it comes to supplying continuity of service for your mission-critical applications in the data centres such as sensitive networks, computer centres, intranet and internet servers. Power failures, leaks, surges or plunges can lead to data loss, equipment damage, communication and internet downtime which could potentially cost your business immensely.
What UPS does for a data centre
The prime jobs of UPS for server room are to supply power and provide power backup to load whenever demanded without interruption. The power we obtain from the power grid is made up of lots of impurities like sag, swell, harmonics, overvoltages, spikes etc. IT servers are very exposed towards these impurities. If IT loads directly subject to this raw power then there will be high chances of the collapse of the server and in some cases, it can burn also due to high voltages. UPS in the data centre pulls out all these impurities and delivers pure power to your servers.
Another important job of UPS is power backup. UPS is connected to a battery bank which supplies power during normal operation. But when the power supply fails from the grid, an online UPS supplies power to load from the batteries without any interruption. Shifting of power from the source to the grid to batteries takes place without any delay. Even if there is a generator with an auto-start facility, it will stand for a few minutes to start and during this delay UPS battery takes care of your IT load.
How does the Data centre UPS work?
To understand the working principles of UPS, we need to consider the following three working modes.
Normal Mode of operation: In this mode, UPS gets power from mains which have voltage and frequency within the input window for which UPS is designed for. During a normal mode of operation, the rectifier converts AC power to DC and supplies an inverter and batteries for charging. Inverter will deliver output by converting DC power to AC with the help of the PWM method.
Battery Mode of operation: UPS for server room will transfer on batteries if there is an input power surge or input power voltage is out of the input window or input frequency is out of the input window or both voltage and frequency are out of the input window or there is a shortcoming on the rectifier side. In such conditions inverters start drawing power from batteries without a seconds delay and supply power to load. When the battery gets drained then UPS will automatically transfer on static bypass.
Bypass mode: The unit transfer on static bypass if there is a fault in the UPS for server room or a power supply failure from the grid and the battery gets drained. In such a condition, UPS will equip power through bypass as long as the voltage and frequency in the set limit.
